7 Best practices to present your ideas on a ZOOM meeting

Business pitch

if you are an entrepreneur, the ability to make a successful presentation to your clients is a must. Nowadays, in a digital age more and more pitches are given at Zoom meetings. Here are some of the best practices to present your business online.

In a post-pandemic world, online business presentations became a necessary skill to master. Whether it is a 30-second elevator pitch or a full Zoom presentation, the ability to pitch an idea to your clients successfully requires certain strategies. Here are some of the best practices you should follow to pitch your business on a Zoom meeting in an engaging and effective way:

  1. Be sure lighting conditions are optimal: If you want your presentation to look professional and engaging, a good lighting setup can elevate the quality of your pitch. A basic rule of thumb would be to position the light source in front of you above your forehead pointing down a bit. This will avoid glare if you use eyeglasses. Make sure the light is not to strong as it will give you the "Burn look" (basically making part of your head glow), your skin should look natural. 2. Look them in the eyes: It might sound odd to look at a camera while you are talking to someone especially if your screen is positioned on the side but you need to get used to it, imagine you are a tv presenter. In today’s world of online presentations, eye contact is a crucial element to connect with your audience and make your pitch engaging. Oftentimes, we might forget and start looking at the screen instead, in this case, positioning your camera right above your screen might help you to be able to have eye contact and use your peripheral view to see your audience.
  3. Beware of your background: If you want to enhance your credibility as a professional, a good-looking background can make a major difference, especially during a pitch presentation. Since you only have a few minutes to capture your client’s attention, a tidy background is critical to achieving this, and most importantly it will make you look like a trustworthy professional. Ah! and one more thing, stay away from virtual background or blur! that is one of the biggest mistakes you can do, you are better of with a simple white wall behind you.
  4. Be mindful of your sound quality: Do a soundcheck with a colleague before you start your presentation. Sound is more important than video. Make sure you have control over any potential noise around you like a barking dog or any other distractions. Whether you are delivering your pitch presentation from your home office or a co-working space there might be background noise that could be potentially distracting for your clients. Stay away from playing external background music (if you don’t have the correct sound settings for it), 9 out of 10, it will sound horrible at best as programs like Zoom are designed to filter out background noise.
  5. Remember to pause: Oftentimes presenters get carried away on Zoom presentations and forget they are in an actual conversation. Be mindful of this. Pause to interact or allow to ask you questions and know when it is time to stop talking.
  6. Engage with your audience by asking them questions: When you make your audience feel noticed, chances are they will focus even more on your presentation. By asking simple questions, you will keep them engaged with your pitch rather than talking for 10 minutes non-stop.
  7. Make sure to have a stable internet connection: No matter how strong your Wi-Fi is, if possible, use an ethernet cable so you can improve your internet quality and avoid risking your connectivity. For less than $10 you can get a good quality cable and an adapter if you happen to deliver your pitch from a laptop.
